Congratulations to SONSI member Suzanne Matheson for having her work selected for a new colouring book featuring detailed drawings of bird hatchlings.

Hatchlings: A Coloring Book Anthology
by Cordelia Norris and Suzanne Matheson.
Description:
This book is designed to have wide appeal. Each of the thirty-five
illustrations, featuring nesting birds with their young, is accompanied by
informative text, so you can learn about the unique characteristics of the
birds as you colour.
As a charitable project, designed in response to the heart-breaking news of
children being separated from their parents at the Mexican border, 25% of
proceeds from each sale goes to The Young Center, a non-profit organization
providing legal and social services to affected children.

Here’s the story behind the book, in Suzanne’s words:
Back in July, on the GNSI facebook page, Cordelia Norris put out a call-for-entry – black line illustrations of North American birds with their young. Several GNSI members contributed illustrations. I responded by submitting my three Pileated Woodpecker images (http://www.suzannematheson.com/fine-art—natural-history.html) as line drawings. Together they tell the story of a woodpecker family from birth to fledging. While the vision for the colouring book did not accommodate multiple images of the same species, my “Pileated Woodpecker Mother and Nestling” image was chosen. My daughter, Anna Matheson, contributed American Kestrel and Mourning Dove illustrations, making us the only two Canadian contributors.

Once the illustrations were decided upon, Cordelia sent out a limited request for researchers. Having a significant resource library on North American Birds, as well as naturalist training and a love for the research process, I offered my services. I became chief researcher, and later proof-reader for the accompanying text.
