October 29, 2012: Wedding cat. Painting by Jennifer Osborne

SONSI member Jennifer Osborn undertook to do a painting a day in support of National Feral Cat Day, October 16th, a day designated by Alley Cat Allies to promote humane care for feral cats. Each day, throughout October, Jennifer did a 5×7 painting of a feral cat. This includes kittens that were born to feral mothers, ferals that were trapped, neutered and released, and rehabilitated feral cats that now live in a home. Each painting is accompanied by their story.

The paintings were done directly onto the canvas board. No pencil sketches, no tracing, just directly painting from the subject photo. For all the paintings only 8 colours were used, similar to a traditional renaissance painter’s pallette. Each painting took approximately 1  hour and 15 minutes. The purpose of doing quick paintings is to try and capture the essence of the animal, not a photographic likeness.
