The logo committee is pleased to present the final design for the new SONSI logo. Many thanks to everyone who contributed ideas, comments, critique, and energy throughout this lengthy, yet fascinating and rewarding process. It truly was a group effort, requiring a lot of learning and creative thought, but I think I can speak for everyone in saying we’re very happy with the final result.

The logo features a frame, which on the web site will host a changing cycle of different member artworks. This will reflect SONSI’s function as a showcase and context for members’ identities as Southern Ontario nature and science illustrators. It also takes advantage of the ability of current electronic media to give us a consistent yet continually variable logo. Kind of like the ‘Google doodle’, it’s not trapped in a static place; this will make the logo something people can look forward to seeing anew and exploring.

The logo as shown above contains a ‘default’ image – which will be used when we need to represent the group as a whole. The image, showing the Fibonacci-based spiral geometry of a pine cone, is based on a concept suggested by (former) member Cara Dawson. The concept immediately struck the committee as an ideal visual representation of both nature and science; both current and timeless, it encompasses what we’re about as contemporary science communicators. Kathryn Chorney created the final illustration.
Many thanks again to all Logo Committee members and contributors past and present, including Elizabeth Pratt (committee Chair), Hall Train, Kathryn Chorney, Mayaan Harel, Jeremy Loranger, and Jennifer Osborn.
